Stone Age

How man made fire!

Hippos, Giraffes and Flamingos classes are learning about the Stone Age.  Each class went into the copse today and tried to see if they could make fire.  The children tried finding two stones.  They struck the stones together to try to form a spark.  Others tried rubbing two sticks together.  Each class then gathered around the pit fire and learnt about tinder, kindling and the three elements of the fire triangle.

The children found that tree bark, especially silver birch was excellent at catching fire, as were 'pine cones' (once they'd established they weren't actually acorns!)

Several children then attempted to light a real fire by striking flint and steel.  Lots were successful at producing sparks and eventually a fire was lit by all classes.
