My Body

This week we learnt about our bodies as we read the Funnybones book written by Janet and Allan Ahlberg. We used the Funnybones story to influence our learning and experiences in different areas of our Bears classroom.

On our practical table, we explored our senses, making and serving flavoured teas, crushing herbs and spices with a pestle and mortar and grinding coffee. We thought about the things the aromas reminded us of - curries and toothpaste. We also squeezed citrus fruits and tasted the juice. Everyone was brave enough to taste the fresh juices and most of us enjoyed them, but some were a little surprising.

In our creative and construction areas, we built people and skeletons with natural materials, playdough, cotton bud bones and construction resources. We enjoyed drawing different features on our laminated faces and building our face jigsaws.

This week we added sounds k, ck, e and u to our phonics keyrings. To practise the letter formations we painted k with khaki paint and a key, wrote ck on the back of a card with a thick black pen, erased e from a chalkboard and painted u with ultramarine paint under an umbrella. Please keep practising with the phonics keyrings and blending cards at home and remember to pop a note in the reading record book when you do. I hope the videos I have uploaded to Tapestry were helpful.

In maths, we explored how numbers can be composed of 1s, and we started to investigate the composition of 3 and 4. We learnt that 3 can be made of 2 and 1 or 1, another 1, and another 1. We made our own set of subitising cards to use in later activities, made counting collections of zoo animals and added the correct number of windows to a numbered house. Outside we measured how tall we were with chalk and a partner, and we made repeating patterns with clothes on a washing line.

Next week, more fun with Funnybones.
