Black history month

This week, we have been celebrating Black History month.

Hippos have been researching and celebrating the achievements of black men and women from the past and present. We have been exploring how the actions of people like Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King impacted society and history and brought about much-needed change. The children were shocked to hear some of the outrageous laws that existed in the past and how unfairly black people were treated. We had a very interesting discussion around the famous line from Martin Luther King's speech: ."I have a dream, that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the colour of their skin, but by the content of their character." We imagined what it must have been like to live in society in those days and wrote diary entries to express the thoughts and feelings of people who attended his speech that day.
