Science

This term our science topic is Properties and Uses of Materials.

We have been learning all about materials and their different properties. Our first big question was: How can we compare and group materials? We looked at different objects and discussed what materials they were made from and then discussed their properties. We created a working wall with the different words that could be used to describe materials.

We then explored 'viscosity'. We started off by asking what is a liquid? Then we tried to think of as many different liquids as we could - fizzy drinks, milk, oil, yoghurt, syrup, ketchup and water. We found out that all liquids flow and can be poured but that they have different viscosities. Viscosity is the property of a liquid that describes how fast or slowly it will flow. This is also referred to as how thick or thin a liquid is. A thick liquid, like Greek style yoghurt, is said to have a high viscosity, and will flow slowly. A thin liquid, like water, is said to have low viscosity, and will flow quickly.

We then asked the big question: How do inventors work? We learnt that an inventor is someone who makes something that has not been made before, to serve a particular purpose, using materials in a way not used before. We used our scientific knowledge and skills to become inventors. Our challenge was to think of new uses for a simple object based on the properties of the material that it is made of and the shape it has been made into.
