Our Early Reading and Phonics lead is Miss Hatchman and our English lead is Miss Finch.

Miss Hatchman
As the Early Reading and Phonics Lead at Beckers Green Primary School, I am passionate about nurturing a love of reading from the very start of every child’s learning journey. As an enthusiastic reader myself (especially during the school holidays!), I know the joy and power that books can bring, and I am committed to ensuring all our children develop the skills and confidence they need to become fluent, lifelong readers.
My vision for early reading is that every child experiences success and pleasure in learning to read—developing not only the technical skills through high-quality phonics teaching, but also a deep appreciation and love for stories, language, and imagination. I believe in the importance of learning to read in the early years, so that our children can then read to learn as they move through school and beyond.
Through consistent and high-quality phonics teaching and a culture that celebrates reading for enjoyment, I aim to build strong foundations that open doors for every learner. By supporting staff, engaging families, and surrounding our children with rich texts and meaningful reading experiences, I want every pupil at Beckers Green to see themselves as readers—curious, confident, and eager to explore the world through words…. Who knows where it might take them?!

Miss Finch
"I have completed the National Professional Qualification for Leading Literacy, which has deepened my understanding of how reading and writing empower children—not just academically, but as tools for expression and opportunity.
I absolutely love learning new vocabulary and often listen to audiobooks while doing chores—it’s one of my favourite ways to keep learning alive in everyday moments! This love of language fuels my commitment to creating a literacy-rich environment where every child can thrive.
I believe that high-quality oracy is the foundation of strong reading and writing. When children speak with confidence, they write with purpose and read with understanding. That’s why I place a strong emphasis on scaffolding writing, ensuring that every learner—regardless of starting point—has the support they need to succeed.
My goal is to nurture a culture of curiosity, creativity, and clarity in communication, helping pupils become not only skilled readers and writers, but thoughtful and articulate individuals."
