Telling the Time

We have been learning to tell the time to the nearest 5 minutes and nearest 1 minute this week.

We have been telling the time this week which is an important skill to build independence by allowing children to manage their daily routines, such as preparing for school or knowing when it is time to play.

We start telling the time by looking at the clock and working out whether times are 'past' the hour or 'to' the hour.

We used a clock similar to this one.

Step 1: locate the minute hand.

Step 2: work out how many minutes past or to it shows.

Step 3: locate the hour hand.

Step 4: work out which hour the hour hand has either gone 'past' or is nearest 'to'.

We then used these skills to tell the time and work out time problems. We answered questions like the ones below:

Can you work out the times shown?

These questions are to the nearest minute:

This is definitely a skill that you need to practise daily. If you want to use an outline resource, this teaching clock is great to use! Google Teaching Clock Topmarks or click the link below.

It would be great to see that Giraffes had been practising this skill in the holidays!
