Science - Sound

Today we started our new science topic of Sound.

We started off by looking at different instruments and the sounds they made. We asked the Big Question - How are sounds made? We found out that sounds are made by an object vibrating and the vibrations cause sound to occur.

We then conducted different experiments to see if we could see the vibrations and work out what sort of sound we could hear.

These were the different experiments we tried:

We put a ruler on the edge of the table and pulled it down:

We asked ourselves:

What was vibrating?

What sound did it make?

We put an elastic band across a box and plucked it:

We asked ourselves:

What was vibrating?

What sound did it make?

We struck the cymbal with a beater:

We asked ourselves:

What was vibrating?

What sound did it make?

We struck a tuning fork against the table and immersed it in water:

We asked ourselves:

What was vibrating?

What sound did it make?

We then held our hands on our necks and made low loud sounds:

We asked ourselves:

What was vibrating?

What sound did it make?

Here are some of our results:

We then used our new knowledge to answer some questions about sound:
