Music
Our music lead is Mrs Carvalho, supported by Mrs Fisher who delivers the music curriculum across the school. She says: I am passionate about music and dedicated to inspiring others through high-quality musical experiences. I can play several instruments read standard notation. Live music is a particular love of mine, and I spend much of my spare time attending a wide variety of performances. Singing is another key passion - I have sung in choirs as both a child and an adult and performed in a variety of venues. Currently, I lead KS2 singing assemblies and the school choir. I have overall responsibility for music at Beckers Green, ensuring that every pupil has the opportunity to develop their musical skills and knowledge.
Specialist music teacher: Louise Fisher
At Beckers Green, we feel that it is important that every child in KS1 and KS2 is taught music by a skilled professional. Louise is a well-qualified music teacher with a wealth of experience from a variety of primary and secondary settings. Music is her passion and she is a strong advocate for excellent music education for all.
Vision
At Beckers Green, we believe that music is for all, regardless of age or ability. We want all children to feel the power of music in their daily lives, whether learning how to play musical instruments, listening to a favourite song, or creating their own original ideas using their own creativity. We recognise that practical skills need a good foundation of musical understanding in order to develop as musicians.
We ensure all children play and perform, improvise and compose, build their aural skills, learn to read music notation and explore a diverse selection of musical styles over time. In addition, music provides a platform to develop other transferable skills and personal qualities including creativity, problem solving, presentation skills, self-confidence, listening skills, learning about other cultures, teamwork and resilience.
Curriculum music for Years 1 – 6 is taught by our music specialist teacher. We have created a new bespoke curriculum to suit our school, which we review and evaluate throughout the year, in order to refine our offer and ensure the best possible provision. All classes across KS1 & 2 have a weekly whole class lesson of 45 - 60 minutes. Our music curriculum runs throughout the year as an important ring-fenced part of the timetable, not on a carousel arrangement. This helps to enable secure musical understanding, knowledge and skills to develop gradually over time.
All children have a wide range of vocal and instrumental opportunities as part of our classroom curriculum, including both tuned and untuned instruments. Whole class instrumental teaching is delivered to everyone, regardless of ability or prior experience, as we have invested in sets of recorders, glockenspiels and ukuleles. This enables us to revisit instruments and build on our previous learning, rather than just as a one-off experience with a temporary visiting tutor. We also ensure we include digital skills into our musical programme. Children learn how to use digital tools to support their music-making (for example GarageBand and Chrome Music Lab).
