Special Educational needs infoRMATION

At Beckers Green Primary School, we believe that every child has the right to belong, participate, achieve and thrive within our school community. We are committed to creating an inclusive environment where all pupils feel safe, valued, respected and represented, regardless of their background, abilities, needs or circumstances.

Inclusion is at the heart of everything we do and is the responsibility of every member of our school community. We recognise that equality is not simply about treating everyone the same; it is about understanding and removing barriers that may prevent some children from fully accessing learning, participating in school life or achieving their potential. We celebrate diversity and value the unique strengths, experiences and contributions of every child.

Through high-quality teaching, a broad and ambitious curriculum, and carefully targeted support where required, we aim to ensure that all pupils can access the opportunities our school offers, develop confidence and independence, and achieve the best possible outcomes.

A child has Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) if they have a learning difficulty or disability which requires special educational provision to be made in order for them to access learning and make progress. SEND is grouped into four broad areas of need:

  • Communication and Interaction
  • Cognition and Learning
  • Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH)
  • Sensory and/or Physical Needs

We also recognise that some children may experience barriers to learning and participation without having an identified special educational need. These barriers may relate to attendance, wellbeing, disadvantage, trauma, mental health, English as an Additional Language (EAL) or other vulnerabilities. We are committed to identifying and addressing these barriers through an inclusive and graduated approach.

If you have any concerns about your child's learning, development or wellbeing, please speak initially to your child's class teacher. You may also contact Mrs Emma Carvalho, our Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Coordinator (SENDCo), who will be happy to discuss your child's needs and the support available.

As part of the Children and Families Act 2014, local authorities are required to publish a Local Offer, outlining the services, support and provision available for children and young people with SEND and their families. The Essex Local Offer can be accessed at:

www.essexlocaloffer.org

The Essex Local Offer provides information about education, health, social care and family support services available within the local area.

Please also refer to our SEND Policy and SEND Information Report, which are available below.

Admission Information

We welcome applications from all children and are committed to ensuring that pupils with SEND can access an inclusive mainstream education wherever this is appropriate to their needs.

For children with an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP), the Local Authority will consult with the school as part of the placement process. We will carefully consider whether we can meet the child's identified needs and provide the provision specified within the EHCP.

If your child has SEND and does not have an EHCP, we encourage you to contact the school to arrange a visit. This provides an opportunity to meet with the Headteacher and SENDCo, discuss your child's strengths and needs, and explore how we can support them to feel successful, included and valued within our school community.

Please refer to our Admissions Policy for further information.

Neurodivergence and Mental Health

We recognise the importance of supporting children's wellbeing, mental health and neurodiversity as part of our inclusive approach. We work closely with families and external agencies to ensure that children receive appropriate support and that barriers to learning, attendance and participation are identified and addressed as early as possible.

For information, guidance and signposting relating to mental health, wellbeing and neurodivergence, please visit the Mental Health section of our website.
