Geography - maps

We braved the weather this week and followed our plotted routes to Braintree Freeport train station!
This half term in Geography we have been developing our maps skills. We began by discussing the differences between maps and aerial photographs and when either would be used.
We then plotted a route from school to the station, making sure we followed the roads and pavements carefully on our maps rather than jumping across fields!
It was touch and go with the weather, but Wednesday afternoon, we put our coats on and off we went! Wow what amazing children they were! We followed our routes, stopping to check at road names and alley ways, and managed to get ourselves safely to Braintree Freeport train station just in time to see the train leave the platform to Braintree.
We decided to wait (under the shelter!), played a game of eye spy, which led us to talk about train safety, discussing the yellow line, and then how wheelchair users would be able t access the train with the ramps. We listened carefully to the announcement and before long we spotted the train in the distance!
The driver must have spotted us too as he gave us a loud blow of the whistle as he approached the station. We waved bye to the members of the public who had joined our game, and watched as the train pulled away, before returning back to school.
I am always very proud of my Elephant's, but incredibly so on our walk - they were so well behaved, not one complained about getting soaked o the way there and then too hot on the way back, such wonderful manners to everyone we saw or who let us cross. What a lovely afternoon!
