Viking Day

Today we had a very exciting visitor - Harold Haroldson a fearsome Viking came in to teach us all about Viking life.
We started the day learning all about the Viking rule in Britain and the different Viking Kings that used to rule Britain. We learnt that they came from Scandavania and that they first landed on Holy Island in Northumbria.
Then we talked about what it is like to be a Viking and were able to look at different aspects of everyday Viking life. We were also able to touch and hold items that the Vikings might have used.

Using an axe to chop wood.

Trying on clothing and feeling different materials.

Looking at tools and writing implements.
Then we learnt about how the girls and boys were treated differently and learnt what are names would have been if we have been born a Viking:
Astrid Harold's Dottir - girls' names always ended in Dottir
Sven Haroldson - Boys' names ended in son
Then we learnt about Crime and Punishment and found out about all the gory ways that the Vikings would punish people for committing different crimes. The Vikings were definitely not to be messed with nor were they fair!
Then we went into the hall and learnt how to use shields and build shield walls for fighting our enemies!
Standing in a shield wall.

We tried marching in our shield wall!

Using our shield wall to hide against attackers throwing deadly tennis balls at us!
We had a fabulous day and learnt lots about the Vikings!
