brilliant botanists

A lovely first week back, kick starting our topic for the half term - Brilliant Botanists.

So lovely to see all the Crocodile's back in school, and what a busy week we have had.

Our topic of Brilliant Botanists has got under way with science as our foundation subject for the week, we have learnt about different parts of flowers and plants, including petals, stem, roots and leaves and the more detailed parts such as the stigma and stamen. We have learnt about evergreen and deciduous trees - and went on a hunt for these, doing some bark rubbing whilst outside. This afternoon, we have carried out an experiment when planting seeds - we will water one plant every day, but leave the other - so we can understand what conditions a seed needs to germinate - grow in to a plant.

We have had some fun in Art this week too, learning about Elizabeth Blackwell who was a Botanical Illustrator - she drew lots of observational drawings of plants and flowers and made a book called the Curious Herbal, for doctors to use to develop herbal medicines. We took part in some observational drawings this morning and wowed, the detail that the children have spotted was amazing! We used thick and thin lines, using pencils and graphite, and added texture and tone to our drawings.
