Stone to Bronze

Please enter an introduction for your blog post here.

Over the last few weeks, the Hippo’s have really immerged themselves into the Stone and Bronze Age. Through our history and Geography lessons we have discussed the changes from Stone Age to Bronze age and what impact this had on people's lives. Stonehenge really caught the children’s interest, so we took one lesson to really understand why it was built and what it was used for. The children then worked in pairs to create their own Stonehenge from diagrams and photographs.

Our Stone age focus continued in our English lessons with a focus on a portal story. Using The Stone Age Boy as our reference the children created a story map and innovated the story. Using the writer’s toolkit the children worked hard to use both compound and complex sentences and include direct speech. We had some interesting conversations of when the main character met the Stone age girl and their family. The stories were fantastic to read, and the descriptions used to set the scene are starting to become more imaginative.

We had lots of fun with area in maths by using post it notes and large pieces of paper to measure the area of different shapes. The children quickly got to grips with rectilinear shapes and how to draw and count the area.

Our class story Max and the millions has got us all gripped. The last chapter before half term has left us on a cliff hanger. The children have loved talking about their predictions on what will happen to the green, blue and red people of the miniature world. We have also found lots of new vocabulary and we have improved our dictionaries skills by finding the definitions.
